About this grade

Muriate of potash, also called potassium chloride, is the main source of potassium for UK farms and is 60% potash. Potassium governs water regulation and grain fill rather than growth itself, and like phosphate it stays put in the soil, so the timing of application is a good deal more forgiving than nitrogen.

Common questions

What does the cost per kilogram figure mean here?
It is the price of a kilogram of potash, written K2O, which is the form potassium content is conventionally expressed in. Muriate of potash is 60% K2O, so a tonne carries 600 kg of it. Divide the price per tonne by 600 to get what a kilogram of potash costs.
What moves the potash price?
Potash is mined, not manufactured, so it is not tied to gas prices the way nitrogen is. Its price is driven by mine supply, the annual contracts struck with the largest importing countries, and freight. It tends to move in longer, slower cycles than nitrogen.
Does the chloride matter?
For most combinable crops and grassland it does not. Muriate of potash is avoided on a small number of chloride sensitive crops, where sulphate of potash is used instead at a considerable premium. If you are growing conventional UK arable crops, muriate is the normal choice.
Where does the daily price come from?
It is produced every day by our forecasting model, and the model is re-validated continuously against weekly UK market prints: a grade publishes a modelled figure only while it beats a naive hold-the-last-price baseline on months it has never seen. The shaded band around the line on the chart is the confidence range of the estimate.
