About this grade
Ammonium nitrate is the nitrogen fertiliser most UK arable and grassland farms build their programme around. Roughly half its nitrogen is already in nitrate form, so the crop can take it up straight away, and the rest converts over the following weeks. It is manufactured in the UK as well as imported, and the domestic product is what this page tracks.
Common questions
- Why is ammonium nitrate usually dearer per tonne than urea?
- Because a tonne of it contains less nitrogen. Urea is 46% nitrogen against 34.5% for ammonium nitrate, so a tonne of urea carries about a third more of what you are actually buying. Compare the cost per kilogram of nitrogen rather than the price per tonne.
- What moves the ammonium nitrate price?
- Natural gas, more than anything else. Gas is the feedstock for the ammonia that nitrogen fertiliser is made from, and it is the single largest input cost, so European gas prices tend to lead ammonium nitrate prices. Import parity sets a ceiling: when imported material lands cheaply, domestic prices follow it down.
- Is this price what I would pay?
- No. It is a modelled estimate of the going UK market rate, published so you have something to measure a quote against. Your delivered price depends on load size, haulage distance, timing and payment terms. Treat the number as a benchmark, not a quotation.
- Where does the daily price come from?
- It is produced every day by our forecasting model, and the model is re-validated continuously against weekly UK market prints: a grade publishes a modelled figure only while it beats a naive hold-the-last-price baseline on months it has never seen. The shaded band around the line on the chart is the confidence range of the estimate.
