About this grade
Diammonium phosphate is the standard way to apply phosphate in the UK, and it brings a useful amount of nitrogen with it: 18% N alongside 46% phosphate. It is placed at drilling or applied in the autumn, and because it supplies two nutrients at once it cannot be priced against a single nutrient the way a straight fertiliser can.
Common questions
- Why is there no cost per kilogram of nutrient for DAP?
- Because DAP supplies two nutrients, nitrogen and phosphate, and splitting one price between them requires you to decide what each is worth. That is a judgement, not arithmetic, and we will not make it on your behalf. The analysis is shown so you can do the split on your own assumptions.
- What moves the DAP price?
- Phosphate rock and sulphur, which are its raw materials, plus ammonia for the nitrogen fraction. Because a small number of countries dominate phosphate exports, their production and export decisions move the world price, and the UK price follows the landed cost of imported material.
- When is DAP normally bought?
- Phosphate is far less mobile in soil than nitrogen, so it does not have to be applied close to the moment of uptake. That gives more freedom over when to buy, and it is one reason a farm watching the price through the year can time a DAP purchase more opportunistically than a nitrogen one.
- Where does the daily price come from?
- It is produced every day by our forecasting model, and the model is re-validated continuously against weekly UK market prints: a grade publishes a modelled figure only while it beats a naive hold-the-last-price baseline on months it has never seen. The shaded band around the line on the chart is the confidence range of the estimate.
